Most of the scenes involving Burton, Blair, and Fletcher are torturously inept-mainly due to misguided performances-the hallucinatory scenes of psychic discovery have a truly visionary quality, especially in the Africa sequence in which the camera swoops through the air on the back of a locust. Fletcher brings in a heretical priest, Burton, and hooks them both up to a mind-processing machine that melds their psyches, taking them on a bizarre exploration of good and evil. Blair, now 18, is again possessed by the demon Pazuzu but this time is treated by child psychologist Fletcher. Not as awful as its notorious reputation would indicate, but certainly not the neglected masterpiece its small cult of supporters has claimed, Boorman's gorgeously shot sequel to THE EXORCIST has isolated moments of breathtaking imagery, but its parts do not add up to a satisfying whole.
